ELMO RENT 2.0 is making the next step in the struggle against climate change and makes its contribution by supporting the annual Climathon event on October 27th.  We seek ideas appropriate for the development of shared economy and short-term rental services and to implement them we offer an opportunity to use our electric cars as well as our service platform as test environment.

The objective of the 24-hour event under the name of Climathon is to find functioning solutions for the reduction of and struggle against climate change.  In 2017 Tallinn is selected as the main platform of the climate change hackathon held simultaneously in one hundred cities of the world and this year the event is focused on sustainable city transport.

Siim Kisler, Minister of Environment opens the Climathon arranged by the Ministry of Environment, Cleantech ForEst and Climate-KIC, which takes place on October 27th and all Climathom participants can follow the event globally on line. “Smart people find new and innovative business opportunities in climate objectives for the low-carbon circular economy. Economic growth, new collateral jobs and general well-being is in everyone’s heads and hands”, said Minister of Environment Kiisler and added that for Estonia, being an innovative and flexible e-state, this is with no doubt a good opportunity to bring city transport to a new level. And not to leave the ideas and solutions only in Tallinn, Minister of Environment invites the residents of other Estonian cities and towns to participate and follow the Climathon brainstorming process.

Livestream of Climathon will be arranged in all cities of the world participating in the event. In the morning on October 28th the ideas will be presented to the jury. The best ideas have a chance to become really implemented solutions and/or develop into start-ups.

Estonia’s contribution in the creation of a global community

The tradition of annual climate hackathon started in 2015 in the lead-up to the Paris climate conference. The popularity of the event grew significantly within the following years and Climathon 2017 will be the largest so far international climate related hackathon in the world. 59 cities took part in Climathon in 2016, having thus doubled the number of the cities participating in 2015. Last year 2,330 ideas were presented in the hackathon.

Ebrahim Mohamed, Education Director of Climate-KIC – the largest EU promoter of climate innovations says: “It’s very inspiring to see that the struggle against climate change is growing in strength with every year. The number of Climathon organizers and hackathon participants is exceptionally big this year. Climathon helps to build a joint community and not only at the local level, but it contributes to the global community of the strugglers against climate change.  Sharing ideas and working for the sake of our common objective we learn a lot from one another“.

Erki Ani, Manager of Cleantech ForEst – organizer of Climathon Tallinn added: “I am extremely happy to be involved in organizing of such a great event. We have a good opportunity to show Estonian innovation in green technology, as well as development of our society, to the wide audience in the whole world including important environmental organizations and interest groups. The available awards include possibilities for further development of ideas, like for instance, a direct access to the world’s largest program of green ideas ClimateLaunchpad. In addition, there is a six month long support in the Tehnopol Startup incubator to help the ideas in entering the market. There is also a lot of interesting and exciting from the Pakri Science and Industrial Park and ELMO RENT 2.0 electric cars short-term rental. Cleantech ForEst as the promoter of Estonian green technology start-up community applies all efforts to help the new ideas in finding appropriate applications as well as in reaching the proper people.”

Climathon is a part of the official agenda of the Estonian Presidency in the EU Council, featuring Estonian activities and innovation approaches in low-carbon economy.
